PRESIDENT'S PRIZE

(Title changed from Llandudno Vase, 2005)

A prize to be awarded annually to a Fellow  of the Association for the best presentation at the Meetings of the Association. The Prize scorers and President shall select the Fellow who shall receive a prize, the amount to be decided by the Council, to help pay his or her expenses to present the same paper at an overseas meeting.

THE NORMAN ROWE LECTURE

(Title changed from President's Lecture, 1993)

The Norman Rowe Lecture shall be given at either the Spring or Autumn Meeting of the Association. The Lecturer, who need not necessarily be a member of the Association, shall be chosen by the President. He/she shall be eligible for a refund of travelling and accommodation expenses.

THE BAOMS SURGERY PRIZE 

(Title changed from DePuy Surgery Prize, 1997).

A prize and medal awarded annually, which will be considered a high honour, to be awarded to a person or persons who are adjudged to have made a major contribution to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the widest sense. Any Fellow of the Association of less than 10 years (from appointment to the first substantive NHS or equivalent consultant Post) shall be eligible. The Endowment Sub-Committee of the Association shall select and recommend a candidate to Council retrospectively.  There shall be no submission of research. The prize may be shared or withheld.

THE DOWN SURGICAL PRIZE 

(Title changed from Maurice Down Research Prize, 1975).

The inclusion of a Fellows name in the title of the paper as given at the meeting excludes it from consideration for the prize. 

The prize winner shall receive a payment (at the discretion of the Council). The prize may be shared or withheld in any year. The prize winner shall be recommended to Council by the Prize Award Sub-Committee, normally convened by the Honorary Editor.

Eligibility: Higher Trainees in the Fellows in Training membership category.

• 2026: Sui Ching Katherine ASIT BAOMS Spotlight Prize: Double Free Flap Reconstruction in Complex Head and Neck Defects: A Systematic Review of Complications, Predictors, and Functional Outcomes

  Aim: Extensive head and neck defects following oncological resection often require double free flap reconstruction to restore form and function. This review synthesises evidence on complications, predictors, and functional outcomes to inform surgical planning and patient choices. 
  Method: A systematic search of major databases was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, identifying 22 eligible studies from 287 screened records. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool for randomised trials and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies.
  Results: Across included studies, flap survival remained consistently >90%, confirming the reliability of double free flap reconstruction in complex head and neck defects, with moderate to high complication rates. Complication rates were comparable to single or combined free-pedicled flaps, with some evidence of reduced donor-site morbidity. Main postoperative complications included infection, wound dehiscence, and fistula formation. Total flap loss was uncommon. 
  Reconstructive failure was more closely linked to disease burden than operative factors. Predictors of adverse outcomes included hypertension, low body mass index, comorbidities, prolonged operative time, and prior radiotherapy. Efficiency improvements were associated with two-team operating, virtual surgical planning, and goal-directed fluid management. Operative durations ranged from 10-13.8 hours, hospital stays from 10-14 days, and five-year survival rates from 40-50%, reflecting disease severity rather than reconstructive failure. 
  Conclusion: Double free flap reconstruction provides a dependable and versatile solution for extensive head and neck defects, achieving high success rates and favourable functional outcomes. Meticulous surgical planning and careful patient optimisation remain essential to maximise reconstructive success and long-term quality of life.
