Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) trainees have judged their trainers and made John Russell, consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon and clinical lead at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, their Trainer of the Year 2018.
The competition starts each January when all UK OMFS trainees are invited by Alistair Smyth, Recruitment and Retention Lead for the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS), to nominate the best trainer on their rotation. David Laugharne (East Midlands), Brian Bisase (Kent, Surrey, Sussex), Ashraf Messiha (London South), Patrick Magennis (NW/Mersey), David Farr (Northern), Thomas Handley (Scotland), Dan Ashworth (South Wales), Alistair Cobb (South West), Ahmed Messahel (West Midlands) and John Russell (Yorkshire and Humber) all had citations submitted by their trainees. Their forms were anonymised and circulated for ranking to all trainees and all training programme directors (TPDs).
John Russell’s citation, which praised his worth as a trainer as ‘priceless’, adding that he is ‘always available for help and to lend support to any trainees’, was ranked top.
“Nobody ever said training shouldn’t be fun,” John Russell commented on winning the award, adding: “I combine serious teaching with humour in a way that I hope motivates trainees. I also believe it’s important to encourage and assist trainees to find logical and reasoned solutions when faced with problems such as bed cancellations or a difficult operation.”
OMFS Training Programme Directors (TPDs) looked at the citations from the perspective of trainers, and ranked Patrick Magennis from Mersey highest.
Patrick Magennis, who is currently BAOMS Chair said: “To be nominated by my trainees is a huge honour. To be ranked highest by our Training Programme Directors is very humbling, particularly when I see the list of colleagues and read about the huge esteem in which their trainees hold these trainers.
“When we started the BAOMS training awards in 2013 we wanted to highlight outstanding performance and acknowledge the surgeons who are devoted to creating the consultants of tomorrow. I encourage everyone to go to the BAOMS website, look at the lists of previous nominees and read their citations. It will make you proud of our great specialty and warm your heart.”
John Russell and Patrick Magennis receive their awards at the BAOMS Annual Scientific Meeting in Durham 20 - 22 June 2018, which takes place at the City’s Gala Theatre.
BAOMS President Ian Martin has made education a priority for this conference, as he explains: “I’ve put together a wide-ranging programme, structured to meet members’ educational needs by concentrating the plenary, masterclass and keynote sessions on areas of everyday practice. And, there’ll be ample opportunity to listen and engage in debate.”
