Story on BBC’s The One Show shows UK oral and facial surgeons leading innovation in facial reconstruction surgery using 3D laser-engineered implants
The One Show story (aired on BBC1, 10 May 2017) illustrates the work of a team of surgeons at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Newcastle
The British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) has welcomed the positive story featured on The One Show that illustrates successful UK-led innovation in facial reconstruction surgery achieved by skilled oral and facial surgeons using 3D laser-engineered implants. The case was a collaboration between plastic surgeons Omar Ahmed, Mani Ragbir and Dan Saleh with oral and facial surgeon colleagues James Adams and Matthew Kennedy together with restorative dentist Francis Nohl.
Shakir Mustafa, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with specialist interest in reconstructive facial surgery using patient-specific solutions, said:
“For some years my team and I here at the Cwm Taf University Health Board, and colleagues in neighbouring Health Boards in South Wales, have successfully developed the everyday use of customised 3D-printed titanium plates and implants by working closely with a highly skilled engineering company and the academic community to develop innovative solutions.
“I believe using virtually designed customised 3D-printed titanium plates can equal or exceed the traditional methods of reconstruction. Customised implants and patient-specific solutions achieve a high level of accuracy to within a millimetre of the planned position in reconstruction. This minimises the room for error substantially, and can reduce operating time and the need for revision surgery at a later stage – potential savings to the NHS.
“I am proud that such pioneering work is being done in the UK, and that Wales is at the forefront of this field leading an exciting collaboration between the NHS, academia and industry.”
