BAOMS Position Statement on the role of Physician Associates in OMFS
21 March 2024
Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) is a unique speciality which has evolved to meet the needs of the patients we serve. It is unique in its requirement for dual qualification in medicine and dentistry. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons work with advanced nurse practitioners and GDC registered dentists, dental nurses, hygienists and therapists and maxillofacial prosthetists. There is no OMFS on the curriculum for physician associates and as they have no dental training, we have no additional role within the team.
BAOMS recognise the plethora of challenges faced by doctors in training, and acknowledge the findings of the ASiT and RCP membership surveys regarding the negative impact of physician associates on the quality of training and workload of doctors. Supporting and enhancing surgical training of our trainees is of paramount importance to delivering high quality patient care.
The BAOMS Council unanimously agree that there is no role for physician associates in the practice of OMFS.
