BAOMS and the Salivary Speciality Interest Group would like to support the UK charity Salivary Gland Cancer UK and raise awareness of the 1st Salivary Gland Cancer Day on 4th October 2025

What Is Salivary Gland Cancer?
Salivary gland cancers are rare with approximately 720 new diagnoses in the UK every year, comprising 6% of all head and neck cancers. They are a histologically diverse group of tumours and mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common primary salivary gland malignancy. With no approved drug therapies, surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment and as such, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMFS) are at the forefront of the fight against salivary gland cancers. Their unique training in surgical oncology, head and neck anatomy and reconstructive surgery makes them integral to the care team. From the initial biopsy and definitive diagnosis to complex surgical resections and reconstruction of the facial and jaw structures, OMFS are essential to achieving the best possible functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients.
The UK charity Salivary Gland Cancer UK is organising the 1st Salivary Gland Cancer day on 04/10/2025 to raise awareness on the condition. For the launch of the Salivary Gland Cancer Day in 2025, their theme is:
“One Community, One Cause: Standing Together in Solidarity for Positive Change”.
This theme highlights the power of unity. Whether you’re a patient, a family member, a friend, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, a Head and Neck Oncologist, or a supporter, we’re all part of one community, standing together to create positive change.
Salivary Gland Cancer Day is about building connections, sharing knowledge, and supporting each other to make a real difference.
By coming together as one community, we can ensure more people are informed, empowered and supported. It can be a very lonely experience to be diagnosed with a salivary gland cancer and Salivary Gland Cancer UK want to do everything they can to help patients feel less alone.
