OMFS Helen Witherow chosen to celebrate 30 years of women in surgery
10 November 2021
Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) Helen Witherow, based at St George’s University Hospitals Trust, is one of the women surgeons recently highlighted and celebrated by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng).
To mark the 30th anniversary of Women in Surgery at RCS England, the College asked members to nominate a colleague, friend or mentor who had inspired them in their surgical careers. Helen Witherow is one of the 30 women surgeons profiled and celebrated. She was nominated by a past student who had been encouraged to pursue their interest in surgery.
Nicky Seymour, who was a third-year medical student at the time, wrote of Helen in her nomination: “Her kindness, encouragement and gentle brilliance fuelled my interest in surgery, and I realised I didn’t need to fit a personality type to succeed. She will most likely be unaware of the impact she had, but I’m very grateful to her.”
Helen says she was very moved by the nomination: “I am really pleased to find out that I had had such a positive effect on a student’s career choices. I always try to support and encourage the students and trainees I work with as much as I can. Training to be a surgeon is a challenge, and the decision to become a maxillofacial surgeon is even more challenging. But, it’s a very rewarding and satisfying job that makes such a difference to the lives of our patients.”
