BAOMS welcomes appointment of Michael Moran as new trainee member of RCSEd Council
British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BAOMS) Council Chair Patrick Magennis has welcomed the appointment of Michael Moran as the new trainee member on the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) Council as an important and progressive move: “It is vital that we give trainees a voice that will be heard and acted on. BAOMS Council benefits from two specialty training representatives and a trainee from our very active junior trainee group. ”
The recent BAOMS collaboration with the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) to give all trainee, and consultant members, free ASiT membership on a three-year pilot was in recognition of the benefits of good communication between trainees and trainers. All trainees are managing the impact of the new contract and the increasing cost of surgical training. Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) tops the league for training costs.
As BAOMS trainee representative, Nabeela Ahmed, put it: “The ASiT link will encourage our interaction with other surgical colleagues so we can all learn from each other. OMFS has a lower profile, partly because of its dental roots – if you pardon the pun. Trainee representation benefits all levels of administration.”
The RCSEd introduced the trainee role to give a voice to surgical trainees at the highest level, and is the only Royal College to do this. Michael Moran is an ear, nose and throat (ENT), head and neck Surgery Registrar in Belfast.
