Shakir Mustafa, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with specialist interest in reconstructive facial surgery using patient-specific solutions, interviewed on BBC Wales Today (6/4/17) as part of the Wales: A Digital Future reports, said: “Pioneering robotic surgery here in Wales is at the cutting edge of cranio maxillofacial innovation.”
Shakir Mustafa and Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon colleague Cellan Thomas were speaking to BBC Wales Today about customised implants and patient-specific cutting guides.
Shakir Mustafa said: “I am proud that such pioneering work is being done in the UK, and that Wales is at the forefront of this field leading an exciting collaboration between the NHS, academia and industry.”
The development of made-to-measure body parts by South Wales-based company Renishaw is one of the few places in the UK where this innovation is taking place. Oral and facial surgeon Shakir Mustafa and his team at Cwm Taf University Health Board have been teamed up with the company for some years. They work in a partnership with colleagues in neighbouring Health Boards and local universities to develop the everyday use of customised 3D-printed titanium plates and implants.
