Sat Parmar, Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours 2021 for his services to oral and maxillofacial cancer surgery.
British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BAOMS) 2019 President, says: “The award is for the entire team in Birmingham, in particular my head and neck cancer colleagues Tim Martin, Prav Praveen, and Matt Idle, as well as the junior medical and dental members of the team.
“The type of surgery the OMFS team carries out is made possible because of the team of experts we work with who have a wide range of expertise. Every single person plays a key role in ensuring the successful recovery of our patients. Tim, Prav, Matt, and I rely on the skills of the cancer nurse specialists, the speech and language therapists, dietetics, ward staff, prosthetists, secretaries, anaesthetists, theatre team, intensive care, my secretaries - and a supportive management team.”
He is clear that all the work they do can only be carried out successfully if there is a functional and supportive team with a high level of expertise.
Sat Parmar says the rewards of oral and maxillofacial surgery are extraordinary, and present hugely interesting challenges, particularly during the covid pandemic: “I and the team are able to make a real difference to patients’ quality of life, and it combines my training as a dentist and a doctor. We are very privileged in the NHS to provide state-of-the-art head and neck cancer treatment.”
