BAOMS 2020 President Rob Bentley starts role as NHSE National Specialty Advisor
28 January 2020
BAOMS 2020 President Rob Bentley has been named the NHS England National (NHSE) Specialist Advisor and Deputy National Clinical Director for Major Trauma and Burns, a significant role for oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS).
Rob Bentley said: “This is an incredibly significant move for an OMFS to be appointed to this position, and I believe this reflects the increasing recognition and importance of our speciality in healthcare today.
“I am extremely honoured to lead in this role and look forward to the challenge it presents over the next three years. I have long believed in commissioning integrated roadside to rehabilitation major trauma care, and I can now ensure this is put into action,” he added.
The new role means that Rob will chair the National Clinical Reference Group (CRG) with Professor Chris Moran, the National Programme of Care Lead. He will also deputise for Professor Moran in his position as National Clinical Director and NHSE Clinical Director for the Trauma Programme of Care in Specialised Commissioning.
Rob Bentley explained: “I will work with him across the whole remit of commissioning this specialised service,” he said, adding that it also includes Emergency Preparedness, Response and Resilience (EPRR) for major incidents and terrorism.
CRGs provide clinical advice and clinicians use their expertise to lead on the development of clinical commissioning policies for specialised services.
Rob Bentley began his post as the National Specialty Advisor at the start of 2020, and is based at NHSE for one day-a-week until 2022: “But, I’ll continue as Clinical Director for the South East London Kent and Medway (SELKaM) Major Trauma Network working from King’s as usual!”
