The South African Society of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeons (SASMFOS) Congress 2019 was hosted this year with the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS).
Bhavin Visavadia, OMFS Cancer and Reconstruction Surgeon at Northwick Park Hospital in London, reporting from the Congress, said: “The Congress aimed to provide guidance on best practice management for surgeons and pathologists, as well as insight into innovation trends in the industry. This extended beyond everyday practice and incorporated new ideas outside the usual for collaboration with different sectors.”
He highlighted the presentation from “highly-respected American Oral and Maxillofacial specialist surgeon Dr Rui Fernandes”, who presented his work on perforator flaps in head and neck reconstruction. And, from private dental practice to healthcare law, UK-based Dr Alasdair McKelvie focused his presentation on legal papers about what drives medical claims and regulatory investigations.
Bhavin Visavadia said that the Congress attracted many other notable speakers such as “BAOMS President Sat Parmar, academic stalwarts Professors Johan Reyneke and Kurt-W Bütow, Dr Louwrens ‘Blackie’ Swart”.
Bhavin also presented his work on nasal reconstruction surgery.
